Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, and in many cases more effective. Working online means fewer missed sessions due to illness or travel, which promotes the consistency that leads to real progress. The shared screen means we're both looking at the same work in real time, and everything from the session can be saved for review afterwards.
Sessions are $97 per hour. There are no hidden fees, no package requirements, and no contracts beyond a term commitment for regular weekly slots.
For most students, one session per week is enough. In some cases I'll recommend twice-weekly sessions if we need to make progress in a short timeframe.
We meet on Zoom at your scheduled time each week. I use a shared whiteboard where we work through problems together in real time. Students can write on it too if they're using a tablet, but pen and paper works just as well. I share my screen to walk through worked examples, and everything we cover can be saved so students can review it afterwards. It's straightforward to set up and most students are comfortable with it within the first session.
Sessions are 60 minutes. Limited 90-minute sessions are available for intensive exam preparation, subject to availability.
You'll need a device for the Zoom along with everything you'd normally use for maths: pen, paper, and calculator. Students can use a tablet with the shared whiteboard but it's not necessary.
Occasionally things come up. If Zoom is blocked by a school network, we switch to Google Meet. If the internet drops, a mobile hotspot is usually enough to finish the session. If a session genuinely can't go ahead, we reschedule and students are never penalised for something outside their control.
Absolutely. However, in my experience students tend to work best and speak more freely when they have the space to work independently. Most parents find that sitting in for the first session and then stepping back works well.
I'll get back to you within a few hours to discuss your situation and current availability. In most cases I'll suggest a free introductory session so we can meet, identify what's needed, and make sure it's a good fit before committing.
To secure a regular weekly slot, I ask for a minimum of one term's commitment. Beyond that, there's no lock-in and you can stop at any time.
I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. I strongly encourage students to rearrange rather than cancel so they don't lose momentum. Consistency matters, and I find it difficult to help students who regularly miss sessions.
