The jump is significant. The breadth and depth is a massive step up from IGCSE. Students should be prepared to work harder and smarter from day one or risk being quickly left behind and facing a very difficult task catching up while still staying on top of new topics in class.
Yes. Cambridge covers significantly more material in a shorter timeframe, with final exams often falling in the first week of term 4. Cambridge also assesses students across topics compared to NCEA's discrete standards approach.
Past papers are essential, but they're not enough on their own. They need to be combined with strategic study that targets specific weaknesses. Relying solely on past papers will leave gaps, particularly with newly introduced topics such as coordinate geometry of the circle in AS Pure.
For students performing strongly in A Level Mathematics who are aiming for competitive engineering or mathematics programmes at top universities, Further Mathematics is highly recommended. For other students, the time is often better spent strengthening their Mathematics grade.
