Working through textbooks topic-by-topic does not teach you how to figure out the right approach to a question. Practising with mixed problems, where you have to decide the approach yourself, is the most effective way to build this skill.
Difficulties are best addressed early. But if you're close to your exam and think you need help, there may still be time to make improvements. If you only have a week or two, get in touch and I'll give you an honest assessment of what progress is realistic.
